Our Projects

Focused in the Athabasca Basin

Denison's exploration and development portfolio consists of numerous projects in the Athabasca Basin region, with a focus in the infrastructure rich eastern portion of the Athabasca Basin.

The Athabasca Basin is home to the world’s largest and highest grade uranium mining and milling operations – including the McArthur River and Cigar Lake uranium mines, as well as the Key Lake and McClean Lake uranium mills.

  • The Athabasca Basin is a region in the Canadian Shield of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta Canada. It is best known as the world's leading source of high-grade uranium.

  • The basin is located just to the south of Lake Athabasca, west of Wollaston Lake and encloses almost all of Cree Lake. It covers about 100,000 square kilometres in Saskatchewan and a small portion of Alberta.

  • The surface of the basin consists of main sandstone sediment varying from 100 to 1000 metres in depth. Uranium ore is mostly found at the base of this sandstone, at the point where it meets the basement.

  • Points North Landing, a permanent supply depot and camp, serves the eastern area of the basin. Road access to the area is provided by Saskatchewan Highway 955 from the village of La Loche on the west side and Saskatchewan Highway 914 and Saskatchewan Highway 905 north of the town of La Ronge on the east side.

  • Uranium was discovered in the region in the 1940s.

  • The McArthur River mine is the world's largest high-grade uranium mine.

    Flagship Project

    Wheeler River

Wheeler River is the largest undeveloped high-grade uranium project in the infrastructure rich eastern portion of the Athabasca Basin region, in northern Saskatchewan - including Proven and Probable Mineral Reserves of 106.4 million pounds U3O8 (Phoenix 219,000 tonnes at 11.7% U3O8 for 56.7 million pounds U3O8; Gryphon 1,257,000 tonnes at 1.8% U3O8 for 49.7 million pounds U3O8).

    Midwest Project

The Midwest Lake project received approval for its Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”) in 2012, and is host to the Midwest Main and Midwest A uranium deposits. An updated mineral resource estimate was completed in 2018, resulting in an estimate of 50.8M lbs U3O8 in Indicated Mineral Resources (1,019,000 tonnes at 2.26% U3O8) plus 18.2M lbs U3O8 in Inferred Mineral Resources (845,000 tonnes at 0.98% U3O8).

    McClean Lake

The McClean Lake project includes several uranium deposits and the McClean Lake uranium mill, which is currently processing ore from the Cigar Lake mine under a toll milling agreement. The McClean Lake mill is licensed to produce up to 24M lbs U3O8 per year and is currently processing for the Cigar Lake mine.

    Waterbury Lake

The Waterbury Lake project covers over 40,000 hectares and is host to the Tthe Heldeth Túé and Huskie uranium deposits, both of which are located within 20 kilometres of Denison’s 22.5% owned McClean Lake mill.  The project is adjacent to the Roughrider and Midwest projects, which also host high-grade uranium deposits.
